Chiropractic manipulation helps improve joint mobility and body motion and improves the efficiency of the body.   Movement patterns will change with activity, time, stress, trauma, child birth, and postural changes, among other things. Manipulation helps to  remove the restricted barriers to realign the vertebrae - improving mobility, strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Although considered to be a relatively quick and painless procedure, feeling occasional slight pressure on joints and/or 'popping' sounds is very common during the procedure.   Response to treatment happens with time – an amount that varies per person and injury.   The ultimate goal is to relieve pain and improve movement and strength.  I encourage my patients to be PRO-active not RE-active!

I will often manipulate the full spine, elbows, wrists and the ankles.  Patients will ask "why am I adjusting the whole body when my back hurts".  The simple answer is the body's efficiency of motion is not only limited to the area of pain.  Pain is there because there was either an acute injury or a dysfunction of movement.  We have heard the phrase "pain is weakness leaving the body".  It can also mean that part of the body is not working properly. Listen to your body!!

Chiropractic Care and The Athlete

Chiropractic care is also very helpful for athletic performance. Any injury to an athlete can be devastating and possibly career-ending. Chiropractic manipulation can improve an athlete's performance  training efficiency and aid in reducing injury potential and is especially important in post injury healing. Dr. Barks has completed specific post graduate training in sports medicine and is continuously enhancing his skills with post-doctoral education.

Children and Chiropractic Care

Children can also benefit from chiropractic care.  Remember, it is about proper and efficient movement, and not pain. Our children are not only participating in daily gym activity, but also in heavier contact sports such as soccer, lacrosse, and football to name a few.  Some of these contact sports can produce subtle (and sometimes heavier) trauma. This trauma can produce a change to the child's movement ability, and could potentially create vulnerability of injury.

With proper spinal alignment and movement, the body as a whole can function more efficiently. The nervous system (brain, spinal cord and associated nerves) reacts positively to spinal manipulation, which helps the body work at it's best, by helping to transmit information from the various parts of the body.
